Natural Wonders & WIldlife
While traveling through Teslin, Yukon, be sure to keep an open eye out for the large amounts of wildlife. You may see grizzly and black bears, coyotes, squirrels, moose and caribou and maybe even some other animals.
While walking by the lake or boating, you may see animals by the shore, like caribou, moose, fox, squirrels and many others. If you like to fish, Teslin Lake contains a large amount of fish. There are trout, salmon [in season], white fish/pike and many others. Some of the animals you could see in nature are, bears, beavers, birds, bats, coyotes, deer, foxes, geese, lynx, marten, moose, rabbits, squirrels, swans, and as many others as you can see. Teslin is surrounded by forests, which is natural habitat for animals to be in. So you may see many forms of wildlife. Most of the Animals stay clear of Teslin itself, but there is a fantastic wildlife museum at the Yukon Motel, left of the bridge leaving Teslin. Bears can be seen at the dump, but they are wild, and you are encouraged to stay in your car, considering bears can be dangerous when they feel threatened by you. For more information, contact the Yukon Conservation Office in Whitehorse. Thank You Kristy Fireweed is a common sight in the Yukon, but if you're lucky and you have a gold pan you might find some gold! There is good salmon fishing in Teslin River. Ravens are a common site in Teslin. Cariboo are seen a lot on the other side of Teslin Lake. Luca S., Grade 5 |
Forest Fires in the Yukon
Forest fires happen occasionally in the Yukon. They usually happen in the summer, when it is hot, and many careless campers are out in the forests. In the winter, even though it's very dry, there are none, since there is so much snow.
It usually starts with a cigarette, a hot match, or a neglected campfire, which very few would think could cause such a disaster. The sad thing is that no one learns, no matter how many fires. Huge forests have been destroyed by one little cigarette butt, which could catch onto anything on the dry ground.
How could this dangerous thing be prevented? Well, first the cigarette butts. If someone could just stomp them out properly, or have an ash tray in his or her vehicle, they wouldn't be much of a problem. The campfires could easily be put out by water or sand, which wouldn't take long.
One of the biggest fires was the "Mayo 5" which destroyed 6000 hectares of land! Many places and forests around the Yukon are now black with charred trees, but the new trees are pushing through the ground, how long before these are destroyed as well?
Remember, it's easier to prevent a fire, than it is to put one out.

Johnston Town is located about 45 km southeast of Teslin on Teslin Lake.
The easiest way to get there is in winter by skidoo. The water in the summer is very shallow near Johnston Town so boats may get stuck. Korey S., Grade 4 |
